Here is a great article from the guys at Minuteman press. You can view the original article at http://www.minutemanpress.co.uk/news/features/should-i-use-posters-or-flyers-to-publicise-an-event-8231.html

When it comes to promoting a business or event, effectively utilising the range of modern resources and facilities available nowadays is one of the factors in the recipe to success. The main purpose of publicising an event is to make more people aware of it, and there are several avenues to go down.

Many businesses or individuals use the mainstream media to publicise their events, but when cutting costs is a prime goal, this may not be an option. Two of the alternatives to these high cost methods are flyer and poster printing. These options, if used in the correct way, will not compromise quality and can be just as effective as, if not more than, high-end advertisements.

Advantages of poster printing

Posters are considered to be great ways to make the most of artistic talent and creative flair, as they are literally just blank canvases to begin working on. Creativeness combined with a strong commercial idea is the most effective way to get the message of the event across and attract the public’s eye.

The effect posters can have on members of the public is very significant, since they are often naturally curious to know what new event is being promoted. Utilising colours the right way can impress them, and the layout can be used to draw their attention to certain parts, often the parts that are the most important. Those with good visual memories may be able to keep the image in their head, making them more likely to remember the date of the event. If planned effectively, posters can have a huge impact.

One of the best things about posters is the fact that they can be placed in almost any location. For example, a concert or festival needs to attract the attention of music lovers; therefore, posters can be easily placed in locations where these people might go often, like a record shop. Similarly, formal events can be advertised in offices or receptions in order to attract the attention of the correct audience.

Posters are more effective in the long term, as they can be left displayed in areas for a while without being disturbed, unlike a flyer which might be picked up and forgotten about. The best type of events to publicise with a poster would be those that have an obvious target audience, so the materials can be tailored toward them and placed in areas where they will be seen.

Advantages of flyer printing

Flyers are often smaller than posters, but can be more flexible in terms of their content because they will be distributed directly to the person the event is aimed at. They are great for emphasising certain points of information, as when they are distributed, they are more likely to be looked at by the desired recipient.

One of the big advantages of flyers is the fact that they can be distributed to a large group of people in a short time period. This is useful if the audience of the event is not very specific, so more people can be invited. For example, a sale of some sort can be promoted by flyers as even if they don’t get distributed to someone who is interested, there is more chance they might pass it on to someone who is – this cannot happen with posters.

Flyers with precise and concise information printed on them are very effective as they will not bore the reader. The recipient of the flyer might only have a few seconds notice for it and if the information is not portrayed effectively to them during that time, the flyer will have failed. A creative but organised flyer is most effective, and will make more of an impact on the viewer.

What to include on posters and flyers

This again depends on what type of event is being publicised, but the basic information is the same. The time, date, location and the reason for the event must be present so the recipient can scan the page and find the information they are looking for without becoming frustrated. A good poster or flyer will have this laid out in an organised way which is easy to read.

Printing quality

Both posters and flyers are great for publicising an event, but if they are not printed to a high quality, they will not do their job appropriately. A good looking and well thought out flyer or poster is one aspect of the effectiveness of the medium, but the end product must be eye catching and it must not look half-hearted and cheap. It is, therefore, important that high quality printing services are used.

Which one to choose

There are several reasons for choosing flyers, as there are for choosing posters. Some people may even use a mixture if they have the time and the resources, but generally most organisations choose one and stick with it to save money.

Both posters and flyers can be more cost effective than many other ways of publicising an event, but each has its own benefits and they should both be considered before making a finite decision.

Generally, posters are used if the event is maybe a few weeks, or even months, away. This is because they are easily displayed in certain areas which people can see time and time again, giving them more chance to remember the date and decide they want to visit the event. Posters work for events such as fairs, car boot sales, and new shop openings.

Flyers can be used in many of the same situations as posters, but are commonly used for more current events. Usually, they are distributed a few days or a week before the upcoming event because people tend to throw them away or lose them quickly, so a closer date would be easier for them to remember if the flyer gets misplaced.

Either way, flyers and posters are very effective for promoting new events, and some people tend to try both to see which works the best for their specific event.
